Before To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Jenny Han wrote The Summer I Turned Pretty. Aside from telling the all-too-relatable coming-of-age story about young love, both novels have been adapted into TV series that are as binge-worthy as the novels themselves. When The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered on Amazon Prime earlier this month, I was instantly transported to the early 2010s when I first read the series and was eerily close in age with the characters—also experiencing the messiness of teenagehood that the plot depicts. The main character, Belly Conklin, always spends the summer in Cousins Beach with her mom’s best friend and her two sons (Jeremiah and Conrad). But this summer is different, the family and friends dynamic Belly has known for so long takes a turn when her friendship with both boys becomes romantic and complicated. I may no longer be in that era of my life but the nostalgia of your first love, heartbreak, and a perfect summer is timeless bringing up all the feels.

Now, imagine watching Belly navigate through teenage firsts while Olivia Rodrigo’s “Brutal” plays in the background (!!). Rodrigo’s music already makes me feel like my teenage angst was yesterday and if I’d had this show’s soundtrack to play on repeat while I wallowed in the emotional highs and lows of the plot—I would have been a problem. To be fair I’m a Pisces so diving head first into emotion isn’t a tough feat for me but if you’re more reserved I promise the soundtrack will push you deeper into the plot, similar to Euphoria. Showrunner and author, Han, curated the perfect mix of nostalgic 2000s hits (I will never not sing along to the Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha”), current Hot 100 songs, and lesser-known tracks from artists like Mini Mansions and JVKE.
