The Weeknd & Lily-Rose Depp Go on a Wild Ride in First Teaser for HBO’s ‘The Idol’
I saw a headline this week after the trailer for The Idol dropped that read “HBO Max’s new show will make Euphoria look like Downtown Abbey, and I cannot wait”. I immediately chuckled at the accuracy and conclusion drawn that anyone shocked by the sex, drugs, alcohol, and overall toxicity displayed in Euphoria should simply stay far, far, away from The Idol. The first pitch in the trailer is that it’s “from the sick and twisted minds” of its co-creators (The Weeknd and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson) prepping the audience for the montage of provocative scenes to follow. Then, comes a promise to tell “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood” and I don’t doubt that they will. The series was first announced in June 2021, set in L.A’s music industry the show tells the story of a self-help guru slash leader of a modern-day cult (played by The Weeknd) and his developing relationship with an up-and-coming pop singer (played by Lily-Rose Depp). Not much can be told from the first teaser about the storyline, but what is shown promises lots of money, drugs, and orgies. It also confirmed that Blackpink’s Jennie will be starring in the show and in a separate statement from her agency she said she found the script “very intriguing” and wanted to be part of it.

Steven Spielberg Directs First Music Video For Marcus Mumford’s “Cannibal”?
Steven Spielberg can now add “music video director” to his already lengthy 50-year-long resume of directing in the film industry. What music video? You may ask. It was for Marcus Mumford’s debut solo track, “Cannibal” and there’s more. Announcing the news on Instagram, Mumford wrote “On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone. Kate Capshaw was the almighty dolly grip.” Capshaw, who is also known for her work as an actress in the film industry, added a first to her resume as well, the aforementioned dolly grip, art director, and producer for the single-take clip. It was a star-studded affair on the intimate set with Carey Mulligan also credited as responsible for costuming and sound. Mumford’s full-length solo debut album, (self-titled), is due September 16th and has features from Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers, and Clairo.

Beyoncé’s New Album ‘Renaissance’ Will Feature Everyone From Drake to Skrillex
Beyoncé’s ongoing album rollout for Renaissance is a lesson in playing hard to get, give them little by little but keep them wanting more. Beyoncé is courting us and we’re all eagerly waiting for more—like simps. First, it was the announcement and unidentified merch. Then, it was the single “Break My Soul”. This week it’s the song credits. But there’s a catch—she only revealed the composer credits so it’s unclear which names are credited for songwriting, vocals, or production. See what she did there? Broke off a piece of the pastry and tossed it at us but kept the rest for herself. The least interesting credit, because it’s to be expected, is Jay-Z (but no hate we love this duo personally and musically). An eyebrow-raising credit is none other than Aubrey Graham, champagne Papi himself, who hasn’t collaborated with Queen Bey since her self-titled album in 2013 on the song “Mine”. There are also Skrillex and Nile Rodgers names on the credits which adds gasoline to the fire that this is going to be a dance-heavy album. Other noteworthy names include Syd, Sabrina Claudio, The Neptunes, Tems, Raphael Saadiq, and Hit-Boy.

Savannah Ré Announces Sophomore EP & Lead Single “About U”
R&B powerhouse Savannah Ré ushers in a new era, with the release of her single “About U” and the announcement of her forthcoming EP, No Weapons. The single is a warm R&B melody that wraps around you like the all-consuming love detailed in the lyrics. It’s a taste of what’s to come—unapologetically real lyrics and honey-tinged sounds. It’s been two years since the release of her debut EP, Opia, and No Weapons looks to build on that foundation solidifying Ré as a tastemaker and impactful voice in her genre.

SZA Joins Doechii on “Persuasive” Remix
The Tampa rapper Doechii just added another flex to her ever-growing resume—a collaboration with fellow TDE label mate SZA. “Persuasive” is an earworm upbeat R&B anthem that only gets better with the addition of SZA. “I created “Persuasive” to uplift people and bring communities together, so having SZA jump on the song was a perfect fit because I’ve always connected with others over her music,” Doechii says about the collab. She continues by sharing a personal anecdote, “Knowing that SZA is with TDE was what originally got me most excited about being on this label, so now that we have a song together it’s a full-circle moment. She really ATE! This collaboration is everything I always imagined it to be.” Doechii’s star is ascending and her forthcoming EP, she / her/ black bitch, releasing on August 5th, will surely add fuel to the fire.
