I Can’t Stop Talking About Chuck on Tour

Role Model/Chuck Timely/Saint Laurent Cowboy/Sabrina Carpenter brought Chuck on Tour to “Vancooter” or “Vancoochie”—his words not mine—for the only Canadian stop on this tour this past weekend. And as someone who has been listening to him since oh, how perfect, this was a huge moment for me. Samia was an incredible opener for the show (and gave me new songs to add to my playlists).

Though her stage setup was simple, her vocals spoke for themselves. Her and her band had great chemistry and seeing them have fun on stage made the energy in the room rise even more. A standout for me was hearing “Pool” live, and getting an introduction to her other music. To me, her set proved that she’s the ultimate cool girl, and I’m excited to see more of her in the future.

Not sure if the Canadian tuxedo was intentional but I’m giving him props for it even if it wasn’t. This was my second time at the Freedom Mobile Arch (or as he called it, “the big arch”) and first time seeing him live. With the tilted stage, “days on tour” tally (III btw), labeled band members, and the size + volume of the crowd, I fear he may be Mr. Big Time now. Setting the tone with his immaculate pre-show playlist consisting of songs including Hannah Montana’s “Ordinary Girl” and Justin Bieber’s “Eenie Meenie,” he had the audience screaming along to songs long before he even stepped onto the stage. Speaking of the audience, everyone had immaculate outfits, a lot of them homemade as highlighted on his official “time capsule” Instagram page, @thehourglass.

Throughout his set, between his little dances and multiple fake outs teasing that he had already “given his all!” between songs, his stage presence did not waver even once. Though this wasn’t opening night and I could hear people around me talking about the setlist and which song was coming up next, there was still a heavy air of anticipation about what he would play next, followed by the crowd going crazy when the recognition of each song hit with its first chords. There were also multiple fan chants like “I’ll do the dishes!” during “The Longest Goodbye” that made it clear his fanbase has become its own community.

Even without any heavy theatrics or outfit changes, between him, his multiple guitar changes, and his band, it felt more than enough. The lighting of the show was perfect and captured the fun and dance-y vibes of his set, and everyone (including him!) was on their feet and dancing the entire show whether it be at the barricade, or in the very back on the lawn, and though he was playing to a big venue, the whole show still felt very personable. Even with his slower songs like “Chasing Midnight,” the energy did not waver once. Hearing “The Wedding” live has also changed my life and is something I hope everyone gets to experience at least once.

All jokes aside, that man can sing. Besides skipping “Honeydew,” the set list was everything I could’ve hoped for, and getting to scream the chorus of “Some Protector” with everyone else at the show did more for me than therapy could.
