2022 started off strong and continues to be a wild year for new music. In February, Kanye took us on another Donda livestream roller coaster, Big Thief soothed our souls with Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, and Oliver Tree tapped into our eccentric side with Cowboy Tears. Not to mention other stellar releases from Jazmine Sullivan, Beach House, and Alt-J. So far, the release schedule for March is looking stacked, here are the upcoming releases we’re looking forward to:
March 4
The Weather Station – ‘How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars’
- Toronto’s very own Tamara Lindeman returns this week with her follow-up record to Ignorance, one of our favorite singles of 2021. Written and recorded in tandem with the aforementioned fave single, How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars looks to continue Lindeman’s hot-streak giving us the perfect album to dance to as we ring in the Spring season. If you’re looking for Fleetwood Mac adjacent vibes, this is for you.
Nilüfer Yanya – ‘Painless’
- Nilüfer Yanya is one of the most intriguing up-and-coming voices in indie-pop and is set to release her second record this week. Led by two incredible singles, Painless sounds like it’ll expand on Yanya’s jazz-pop roots and bring her to new rocking heights. With her visceral songwriting, brilliant guitar-playing, and dynamically deep voice, Painless is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated records of the entire year.
March 11
Rex Orange County – ‘Who Cares?’
- The king of the boy-next-door vibe is back this month with Who Cares? his first record in three years. Produced by Benny Sings and recorded with many members of his original band, Who Cares? looks to be a return to the playful DIY indie-rock vibe that we all fell in love with on his first two records. Hopefully, Rex’s charm is as resonant throughout the record as it is on his single “Amazing”, one of the early contenders for cutest song of the year.
Ghost – ‘Impera’
- The revivalists of disco-esque 80’s metal return with Impera, following up their highly acclaimed Prequelle from 2018. Ghost is arguably one of the most interesting rock bands out there today, and with constantly changing vibes, looks, and lineups, they never fail to surprise their fans in the best of ways. Impera should be the dance-metal romp we all need as we shake off our winter funk.
Gayle – ‘a study of the human experience volume 1’
- Gayle is the latest artist to completely blow up on TikTok from her single “abcdefu” and the 7 (!) different versions of it she’s released in the last few months. Looking to prove she’s more than a come-and-go TikTok sensation, Gayle releases her first EP this month featuring her follow-up single “Ur Just Horny” along with a handful of new tracks. This’ll likely feature some of the catchiest pop songs of the year, so get ready to have their hooks stuck in your head.
March 18
Charli XCX – ‘CRASH’
- Charli is on a mission these days. After releasing the inspiring how i’m feeling now, an album made entirely in her home, Charli is ready to completely come out of her shell on CRASH. With stellar singles featuring Christine and the Queens, Rina Sawayama, and Caroline Polachek, Charli and all of her friends are poised to give us some of the best anthems of the year. Just you wait, this will be the record you’ll be blasting poolside with all your friends this summer.
Rosalía – ‘MOTOMAMI’
- RosalÍa’s rise to the top of the music industry has been game-changing, to say the least. After releasing some of the biggest flamenco pop tracks of the decade, remixing the Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, and dropping a single with Billie Eilish for Euphoria, RosalÍa follows up her hit record El Mal Querer with MOTOMAMI. The record features the stunning track “LA FAMA” featuring The Weeknd along with her flashy single “SAOKO” which is turning out to be one of the best songs of the year (so far). MOTOMAMI will likely be a record that you won’t be able to escape this year, not that you’ll want to.
March 22
Phife Dawg – ‘Forever’
- Arriving six years after his passing, we’re finally getting the last record of Phife Dawg’s revelatory career. Started prehumous and completed by Q-Tip, Bob Power, and the Tribe extended family Forever looks to be the legendary swan song suited for an artist as paramount as Phife. This is the last we’ll likely ever hear from Phife Dawg and marks the celebration of his everlasting artistic legacy.
March 25
WALLOWS – ‘Tell Me That It’s Over’
- The indie-pop boys are back this month with their sophomore record Tell Me That It’s Over, their follow-up to their smash hit debut record Nothing Happens. The record is produced by Ariel Rechtshaid—who’s known for producing the records of HAIM and Vampire Weekend—giving the group a diverse sound. Led by actor Dylan Minnette, WALLOWS is perhaps one of the most fun groups out there, and this album will happily offer us plenty of pop bangers.
Denzel Curry – ‘Melt My Eyez See Your Future’
- Rap’s most interesting voice returns with Melt My Eyez See Your Future, the long-awaited follow-up to his stellar mixtape UNLOCKED. This record sees Denzel returning to his more conceptual roots, and showcases his ability to experiment with the rap genre like no other. With features from slowthai, Robert Glasper, Rico Nasty, and more, we can expect this record to floor us just like TA13OO did back in 2018. Get ready to have your mind blown.
Maren Morris – ‘Humble Quest’
- Slated to be the first big country release of 2022, Maren Morris releases her sophomore record later this month. Featuring lead single “Circles Around This Town”, and produced by Greg Kurstin, Humble Quest is a record inspired by Maren’s fast-moving career screeching to a halt due to the pandemic. As one of the rare sincere voices in the genre, Morris will likely break our hearts and heal them all at once throughout this record.
Barrie – ‘Barbara’
- One of the most underrated voices in indie-pop returns later this month with her sophomore record, Barbara. Written over the course of the last two years and partly inspired by the tragic death of her father, Barrie’s intimate songwriting is front and center woven through layers of dance-pop production. If you like the DIY sounds of Clairo and Claud, then you should definitely mark your calendar for this release.
