When the B-52s famously sang about a little old place that they could “get together” on their breakout single “Love Shack,” it’s unclear if there was a seven-foot hot tub in the shape of a champagne glass or a water slide lit by fluorescent lights in their sightlines. These kinds of amenities would naturally elevate any romantic hotel getaway, especially if you’ve got an itch for kitsch like Margaret and Corey Bienert, founders of A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour.
A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour is a website dedicated to reviewing love shacks and hidden gem hotels. It started after the couple booked a romantic getaway in the Poconos at the Cove Hotel, a couples-only resort that is home to a number of champagne glass tubs. “When we started going to these places for fun I kept saying, ‘People need to see this,’” Margaret tells us. “We didn’t know what would come of it but we strongly believed that there were people out there who would be just as into these love hotels and fantasy suites as we were.”
Margaret and Corey have dipped their toes in more heart-shaped bathtubs than most people will ever see in their lifetime so we asked them to share their favorite love shack locales that they’ve encountered throughout their travels.
Cove Haven
194 Lakeview Dr, Lakeville, PA
Cove Haven was the first place we stayed when we started looking for love hotels. This place is retro-romance heaven and has so many wonderfully kitschy rooms with heart-shaped tubs, champagne-glass tubs, and mirrors galore. It’s not just incredible rooms though, it’s an entire resort. Think summer camp for adults, with a focus on romance. The first time I saw the champagne tub I was like, “This is it. Life doesn’t get better than this.” And that was before we even saw their faux ice-skating rink.
Sunset Inn & Suites
100 Sunrise Court, Clinton, IL
Sunset Inn & Suites is a theme hotel in the middle of a whole lot of cornfields in Illinois. They have some classic vintage-themed rooms like the cave room, rainforest room, and space room, but they are also unique in that they’re still adding new rooms. Their newest beach-themed room is incredible and, honestly, it’s one of the cleanest theme hotels we’ve ever found.
Sybaris Pool Suites
Various Locations
Sybaris Pool Suites is a midwest chain of romance-focused hotels with private jacuzzis and pools. They have a room that has a water slide and that might be the most fun room we’ve ever stayed in. Nothing says romance like water-sliding naked under some fluorescent lights.
Madonna Inn
100 Madonna Rd., San Luis Obispo, CA
We’ve been to the Madonna Inn a couple times now and there is still so much we haven’t seen. We love the kitschy decor and special cocktails. I can’t wait to go when things are safe again so we can enjoy their beautiful indoor dining and fun events. I’ve heard they throw an epic party.
The Black Swan Inn
746 E. Center, Pocatello, ID
The Black Swan Inn is such a gem of a hotel and we can’t wait to go back. It’s owned by a couple in Idaho who create the theme rooms themselves. It’s clean, unique, and so much attention to detail has gone into this place. We had so much fun staying in their Under the Sea room and will never ever forget that seashell bed. Still trying to figure out how to make one for our own house.
Castlewood Cottages
547 Main St, Big Bear Lake, CA
We stayed at Castlewood Cottages in Big Bear California recently and it was one of the most epic stays we’ve ever experienced. We were completely blown away by their themed cabins! I don’t want to give it away because the episode hasn’t been released yet, but let’s just say they leave you costumes to use in your suite and we really utilized that.
Executive Fantasy Hotels
Various Locations
The Executive Fantasy Hotels in Miami aren’t necessarily something I would recommend to most people because they’re a little dirty (in more ways than one) but when we saw the “love chairs” they had bolted to the floor I knew we would never forget those rooms—even if we wanted to. Honestly, if you can get past the grime, it’s such a blast to have heart jacuzzis, poles to dance on, and sex chairs to experience.
