All month it’s 4/20, and while we’re all cooped up inside, Netflix is taking food competitions to a higher level on Cooked With Cannabis.
The Netflix series features Kelis (Milkshakes, anyone?) and Portland-based chef Leather Storrs, with special guest judges on each episode including Too $hort, El-P and Elle King. Contestants compete under timed challenges to win $10,000—it’s MasterChef meets leafy, kiefy cuisine.
Kelis has kept things spicy since her 2014 album, Food, and a personal cookbook written in 2018. Forever climbing munchie mountain, the R&B songstress-turned chef has made appearances on a number of reality TV shows, most recently The Masked Singer in the UK and her own cooking show, Saucy and Sweet.
Anything but half-baked, Cooked With Cannabis will serve as educational and inspirational to anyone at home with an appetite for indica, or those who just want to curl up in-da-couch with a bag of Cheetos and find inspo in and out of the kitchen.
Cooked with Cannabis launches its first season with six episodes, April 20 on Netflix.
EDIBLE ESSENTIALS
If you’re feeling inclined to flex your own cooking buds, here are some of our favourite products to roll into your at-home cooking regime.
With 30 mg/ml of THC and no CBD, just one drop of this already-activated oil can infuse any dish or drink with a high equivalent to toking three joints at once.
Not for the faint of heart, these drops are for experienced high taste buds. At 30 mg of THC per 1 ml drop, it’s one of the highest dosages available on the legal market and can provide a blissful high lasting the whole evening. For something more balanced, try a formula with CBD—there is the 15:15 option, with a ratio of 15mg CBD to 15ml THC.
The LEVO II Oil Infuser uses bud and oil to make your meals more sticky and less icky. It works to combine weed with oil, butter or glycerin for easy at-home infusions. Think of it as an espresso machine for cannabis, because it sure looks like one — unless that’s the weed talking.
Ardent NOVA Decarboxylator is also a popular appliance choice, heating your weed to the perfect temperature. With this gadget you can get into finer dosing, and learn to cook with the herb itself letting you tap into expansive recipes.
THC Milk Chocolate Bars by Bhang
Edible chocolate is an easy way to make potent baked goods like weed brownies and cookies. THC Milk Chocolate Bars by Bhang is a sweet choice option and it’s breakable into smaller pieces at 2.5 mg each. Melt these into your recipes…and then feel yourself melt.
COOKING TIPS
Decarboxylation 101: Decarboxylation is a technical term for heating weed to activate the THC. To draw out the full potential of cannabis in edibles, it needs to be decarboxylated, which has to be done at a specific temperature for a specific length of time. DIY ‘decarbing’ can be done simply by baking ground bud or trim on a baking sheet with parchment paper or tin foil for at least a half an hour at 220 degrees Fahrenheit (105 Celsius).
The cannabis is absorbed by fats and is soluble with different cooking oils. Budder and cannabis-infused oils can simply replace vegetable oil, etc. even in boxed mixes.
Coconut oil is a highly effective choice, too. These can all be a matter of preference, dosing, or whether you want to bring out or mute the weed’s own flavour.
All of the above provide a different experience from ripping a joint or hitting that bong in your buddy’s basement. Be patient, have fun and take it one serving at a time . If we’ve learned anything from “guy on the couch” in Half Baked, it’s don’t get lost in the sauce.
And remember, as fun as weed looks on TV, when you’re cooking with cannabis at home the results can vary. The use of cannabis products may involve risks to health, some of which may not be known or fully understood.
