With St. Patrick’s Day festivities in full swing, you’ll most likely be bombarded with the sounds of Dropkick Murphys’ “Shipping Up to Boston,” The Dubliners’ “Whiskey in the Jar,” and plenty of traditional Irish jigs. But beyond these St. Patrick’s Day staples, a new wave of post-punk is taking over Ireland’s music scene.
Drawing inspiration from iconic Irish artists like U2, My Bloody Valentine, and Sinéad O’Connor, this new generation is pairing politically charged lyrics with a sound that blends punk, shoegaze, and alternative rock. These artists are loud, unapologetic, and rewriting what it means to be Irish in the 21st century.
