“Lonely” by Justin Bieber, “Tear Myself Apart” by Tate McRae, and “bad guy” by Billie Eilish, what do all these songs from different artists have in common? If you look closely at the songwriting credits for each you’ll see the name FINNEAS. Also known for being Billie Eilish’s brother, Finneas O’Connell is the producer and songwriter mastermind behind both of Eilish’s megahit albums. It all started with the two of them recording music together in their bedroom and putting a song on Soundcloud that amassed thousands of listens and caught the attention of A&R executives. Since then he’s won eight Grammy Awards and was Spotify’s top songwriter last year because his resume goes way beyond Eilish’s music. His ability to write and produce songs that perfectly fit the talents of an artist is what’s led him to work with Justin Bieber, Camilla Cabello, Kid Cudi, and Selena Gomez to name a few.
He recently stepped out from behind the scenes to release his debut record Optimist and is on his own North American tour. In addition to his many musical accolades, he likes everything sauceless, he’s often told he looks British, he falls in love easily and does a great Timothée Chamalet impression—as I learned watching his Chicken Shop Date with Amelia Dimoldenberg.
Below, get acquainted with some of his production and songwriting collaborations that are not with his sister.
