Group chats: you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. Some of us live for the endless memes and round-table-style conversations with friends, while others can’t take the non-stop notifications. Regardless of your stance on group chats, there has to be a handful of people—celebrities, artists, and comedians—that you would kill to get in a convo with. A simple question like, “who is in your dream celebrity group chat?” can actually tell you a lot about a person—their interests, role models, sense of humor…etc. We got the tea on the most interesting hypothetical group chats with musical legends, politicians, and comedians as told by today’s rising artists. We’re crowning Michael Jackson and Prince the kings of the dream group chat—crown emoji and all—because they were the most in-demand participants. For our first edition of this roundup, we asked everyone from R&B darlings Brandy and Jorja Smith to hip-hop artists AJ Tracey and 24kGoldn.
Q: Who is in your dream celebrity group chat?
Jorja Smith
“My dream group chat? Me, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Joanne The Scammer, and Elsa Majimbo…who else is jokes? I don’t know. But do you know what? I hate group chats. Sorry, everyone [laughs].”
Dyllón Burnside
“Prince is number one. Barack Obama, Michelle Obama— who else? Elton John [laughs]. And Nelson Mandela. A very diverse group.”
Brandy
“Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince. I would just be asking them everything.”
AJ Tracey
“They wouldn’t all get on with each other. I would have to speak to Michael Jackson. I would just love to hear what he has to say solely for his music. James Brown, Prodigy, Mobb Deep, and DMX have to be in there. And Mariah Carey. “
Tiana Major9
“D’angelo, Nai Palm, Robert Glasper, and H.E.R.”
24kGoldn
“I’m not really a group chat type of person. I used to be, but now I just find it hard. If I had to pick, probably Drake, Young Thug, Doja Cat, because she’ll probably send the best memes in the group chat, and Dave Chapelle—he’s definitely the funniest person in the group chat.”
Alex Aiono
“I have to think of somebody that is always going to make you think. I would say André 3000 [and] Frank Ocean because creatively, I look at their art and I sometimes go, how in the world did you come up with that? Spike Lee would be a great group chat—the ideas would push your mindset. It’s the three of us, and then let’s have someone who is the polar opposite, like Tom Hanks. Greatest group chat ever.”
Hayley Law
“I want to think of people that could help me [answer] questions, and then some people that can keep it light if necessary. This is such a hard question. Wolfgang Puck, Snoop Dogg, Kelis, and then let’s say the music producer, Dark Child. There would be interesting conversations.”
Amrit
“Leslie Jordan, Joan Rivers, Cher, Dolly Parton, and Kylie Minogue.”
