Everyone and their mother has been talking about Drake this week since he announced his new album Certified Lover Boy would be dropping on September 3rd. Staying true to his word, and not pushing the release any further or holding a listening party with a CN tower replica, CLB is here for all your Instagram caption needs. A lot has happened leading up to the release so let’s recap.
First, Drake entered the chat revealing his album art as a series of pregnant girl emojis in different colors done by Damien Hirst. Fans speculated it was because the album was nine months late, originally supposed to be released in January. Second, OVO members traveled the streets of Toronto, in a G Wagon naturally, and handed out CLB merch to pedestrians. Third, billboards started popping up in cities worldwide giving hints to the features on the album. Points for cleverness because each city hinted at a feature from an artist that was native to that location. By the eve of September 3rd, the buzz about his new album was at a fever pitch.
The first 24 hours after a Drake release is a time for reflection, to decode lyrics, pull Instagram captions, make memes, and question how a guy who only loves his bed and his mama can have so many feelings. As expected by the billboards, the album is stacked with features from hip-hop royalty. There’s Jay-Z, Lil Baby, Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Future, Young Thug, Kid Cudi, and more. The first track titled “Champagne Poetry” samples The Beatles iconic song “Michelle”, giving John Lennon and Paul McCartney songwriting credit. The album is full of puns and flexes, he even found a rhyme for Milwaukee Bucks player Giannis Antetokounmpo’s last name. The first music video to be released from the album is “Way 2 Sexy” featuring Future and Young Thug. There’s a lot going on with Drake in various outfits but he got a Kawhi Leonard cameo which is reason enough to watch the video.
One thing fans were looking out for in particular was any references to Kanye that would continue their longstanding feud. Before the release of Donda, Kanye posted Drake’s Toronto address on his Instagram and soon deleted it. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we have a response on the track titled “7am On Bridle Path” which is a direct reference to his address with Bridle Path being the street. “Give that address to your driver, make it your destination, ‘Stead of just a post out of desperation” raps Drake referencing the beef without mentioning Kanye directly. Even though CLB and Donda have both dropped, I would bet they’ll continue to make headlines for weeks to come.
