Drake and 21 Savage Drop New Album ‘Her Loss’
After multiple collaborations between Drake and 21 Savage in recent years, the two hip-hop magnates have taken their relationship to the next level with Her Loss. They dropped a 16-track album, with a singular credited feature by Travis Scott on “Pussy & Millions” and a sample and vocal interpolation of Daft Punk’s “One More Time” on “Circo Loco”. Drake brings the sticky hooks and 21 Savage brings menacing icy bars on Her Loss, which is impressive in its own right but let’s have a moment for the rollout. Neither artists are really known for doing media blitz promotional pieces, so it was a bit jarring to see them in an Instagram post announcing their October Vogue cover thanking Anna Wintour in the caption for seeing their vision, an NPR Tiny Desk concert, and being interviewed by Howard Stern. Oh wait, it’s because it was all fake! Even if you wish it wasn’t. Truthfully, it didn’t have to be real because the hype was unwavering. Her Loss was pushed a week back after Drake’s producer 40 caught a case of COVID—which I’m now questioning as well, with this rollout having me in a tizzy over what is reality—leaving an extra week for the masterful rollout. And as fun as it all was, we can now indulge in the collab album, beautifully packaged in an iconic close up shot of model Qui Yasuka. Her Loss, our gain.

Remembering Takeoff: How He and the Migos Flow Changed Atlanta Rap 
The tragic news of Takeoff’s death broke early on November 1st and as it slowly started to sink in that the world lost another talented artist and member of the beloved Migos, the tributes and condolences began flooding in. Takeoff had just released his first album as a duo with Quavo, naming themselves Unc & Phew, titled Only Built for Infinity Links which showcases their familial bond (Quavo was Takeoff’s Uncle) and talent nearly 10 after their Migos debut. As Metro Boomin pointed out on Twitter in a note sharing his grief and memories of Takeoff, when public figures pass nowadays it becomes nothing more than a headline or gossip. Rather than focusing on the details of his death, let’s remember the things he accomplished. In 2013, when Migos released “Versace”, showcasing their quick jab triplet flow and undeniable ability to rap friendly metaphors that break through the pop culture zeitgeist turning bars into captions, it marked the beginning of a cultural shift in hip hop. Takeoff, the most reserved member of the group, was a master of syncopation and the way he could exuberantly spit bars was always innovative. It was his technical gifts that inspired the name, Takeoff, Quavo shared in his Hot Ones interview. Back in the day when they used to record on Movie Maker, Takeoff was the only member who could record his bars in one take with no mistakes birthing the moniker he’s known for. In an interview with Rap Radar, Pierre Thomas co-founder of Quality Control Music, recalls how Gucci Mane introduced him to Migos’ music and Takeoff instantly stood out. While Takeoff was a man of few words in the public, his music spoke for itself and his verses often proved how he could take the barebones of the triplet flow and run circles around it serving rhyme patterns and flow switches Migos copycats could only dream of (cc: this LA Leakers freestyle).

Brockhampton Shares the Lead Single, “Big Pussy”, From Final Album ‘Family’
There’s a melancholic anticipation for Brockhampton’s final album The Family, landing November 17th, marking the end of the heartthrob boy band. Though this isn’t a surprise as there has been talk about a final album for some time, it’s saddening all the same. After the group’s Coachella performance, following their 2021 album Road Runner: New Light, New Machine, they played a clip of boy band member Kevin Abstract discussing the last project. The video then cuts to read “Final Album. 2022.” And the time has come, for better or worse. Brockhampton has now released their first single “Big Pussy” from The Family, along with a music video directed by Alex Huggins and Harrison Fisherman, shot in NYC and featuring many faces of humans of New York. The single was produced by Bearface and Nick Velez, and is a solo vocal showcase for Kevin Abstract, a departure from the usual nature of Brockhampton posse cuts. “Big Pussy” is an electrifying banger with tantalizing energy delivered to us through conduit Kevin Abstract.

Selena Gomez Releases Moving Documentary ‘My Mind and Me’
If you know anything about Selena Gomez, you know she has been a long-time advocate for prioritizing mental health and being transparent with her struggles of being under the limelight. While many public figures could choose to build their walls up in fear of a camera getting in, Selena lets us in in an effort to make us feel a little less estranged in this world. My Mind and Me, Selena’s new documentary, debuts today, where she partnered up with filmmaker Alek Keshishian to record the past six years of her life. She invites us into her world that she had kept private and embraces vulnerability. From health crises and the cancellation of her Revival Tour, to a much-needed two-year pause to going on a trip to Kenya to do charitable work. We watch Selena deal with everything as her world seemingly spun out of control. In the process, she learned to breathe and accept her new body and self. Selena is a breath of fresh air in an industry that seems so detached from the mundane reality where the rest of us live, and we cannot wait to fall in love with Selena even more after watching her new film.

Taylor Swift Becomes First Musician to Claim Entire Top 10 on Billboard Hot 100 
Taylor Swift made history this week as the singer claimed all Top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US with tracks from her latest album, Midnights. Drake held the previous record with 9 of the Top 10 songs for a week in September 2021, but he’s no match to the force to be reckoned with, aka the Swifties. Midnights came out in late October and quickly became one of the biggest album launches in nearly 7 years; having the biggest first week of sales of any album this year, almost doubling the numbers of the previous title-holder Harry’s House and breaking global Spotify records for the most streamers of a single album in one day. In response to the news, the pop star tweeted, “10 out of 10 of the Hot 100??? On my 10th album??? I AM IN SHAMBLES.” To add to such a celebratory moment, the singer announced the official dates for the North American leg of her accompanying The Eras Tour with artist friends Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers, beabadoobee, HAIM and GAYLE set to join Taylor in different shows on the continent starting mid-March of 2023.
