Now entering its third year of operations, Diplo’s Run Club blends fitness and music with the proceeds going to raise money for children in communities who cannot afford equipment, apparel or footwear through a non-profit organization Good Sports. His runs will take place in 9 different cities across America serving almost as if it were a tour, where fans will run a 5k, and then enjoy a set list full of rave classics, with a near 35 track set prepared for fans in attendance.
John Summit Run & Rave
John Summit’s “Run & Rave”’s are often pop-up fitness events that lead into music events hosted in collaboration with brands such as Lululemon. The group often paired with exclusive high energy DJ sets, including his most notable one taking place in New York City where he basically took over the High Line and Vessel or the race-and-rave events for SeaWheeze in Vancouver. Usually invites are given out through short, surprise morning social media posts with limited capacity. Following the run, a short DJ performance will take place often at a city landmark or set festival stage.
Darude Sandstorm Run
For the second consecutive year, Darude’s Sandstorm Run is set to kickoff next week in Darude’s home nation of Finland. Last year, The Sandstorm Run held host to runners from 17 different nations, with up to 852 participants running, jogging or walking the route which travels through the iconic locations of the Sandstorm music video recorded back in 2000, including Kaivopuisto and the Helsinki Cathedral. They encourage the fans to dress up in the Sandstorm style or anything fancy of their choice to take photos are the designated selfie stop. This year’s rendition already has sign-ups from 32 different countries and the number of attendees. After the run, there will be a brand new post-run concert hosted by Darude himself with support from other artists such as lau.ra and Rony Rex.
Leo Zhu and Heather Wang’s Ravers Run Club
Generally powered by a backpack-mounted sound system, the Toronto based run club hosted by local DJs Leo Zhu and Heather Wang, creates a fantastic coastline/waterfront run done on a weekly basis free of charge. While operating at a smaller scale than the above, these runs not only promote both DJs, but also serve as a great way to stay fit especially during festival season.
Cactunes and Pacetronik
An incredible event taking place in the streets of São Paulo, Brazil, Cactunes and Patronik power the viral “running raves” that essentially take over the streets. They merge running with rave culture by pairing the group runs with live DJs, enormous mobile speakers , turning the city streets into basically a mobile night-club street party with hundreds of participants. While it is not charitably organized, the event is an incredible phenomenon that has drawn in plenty of eyes and even more bodies to create what seems to be a Brazilian signature: an electric atmosphere.
Honorable Mentions: Gunna and Travis Barker
While not considered DJs, their work is still commendable due to their high-profile 5k run events in order to raise money for charity and communities through fun engaging fan activities through fitness. Gunna, in particular, started the WunnaRun, where fans will run a 5k with Gunna encouraging a better healthy lifestyle while fundraising to better the lives of communities in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia through the entry fee tickets. They also encourage fans to join their group on Strava, an app that tracks your runs, and logs it to keep track of your fitness daily. Barker on the other hand, started his initiative from his daily 3 mile runs while he was on tour. His initiative, titled Run Travis Run, encourages fans to run blending music, community fitness and of course charitable fundraising for CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort).
