Join MICHELLE, the New York-based band, as they give us a behind-the-scenes look of their music-making. While putting together charm bracelets at Hi Beads, the group shares what makes their sound so unique.

Walk me through the creative process of making your music.
Sofia D’Angelo: It really depends because there’s so many of us, typically we’ll get into smaller groups of two or three, maybe even four in the studio. It’ll usually be one or two of the vocalists with one of the producers and we’ll either write from a beat that the guys have premade, one of us will come in with a melody idea or even a chord progression and we’ll go from there. Typically before writing an album, we’ll have a big meeting about what we want to get out of the sessions. For After Dinner, We Talk Dreams, we all wanted to experience some sort of catharsis while writing that record – and I would say we did that – and for Songs About You Specifically, it was written over a much longer period of time. It was cool, selecting our favourites from 2020 – 2022 to last year and then putting that album together.

How do you think you maintain such a cohesive sound when you’re writing music together?
Layla Ku: I think maybe our music has just become such an amalgamation of the six of us, that any sort of by-product of any iteration of us in a room is going to yield similar results. I think Charlie and Julian have a very distinct sound when it comes to production, so it’s always going to have that certain feeling that whatever project before has, even if it’s different thematically or the genre is kind of leaning one way or another, it’s always going to have a little bit of itself.

Where do you guys see Michelle in the next five years, and long term goals do you expect for your band?
Charlie Kilgore: Grammys, state sponsored space mission. No, I don’t know. Where do you see us in five years?
Emma Lee: I don’t know. Hopefully we’re still doing this, maybe we’ll have one more hotel room so we don’t have to share one, but I also love sharing – that would be a luxury. I don’t know, I always have difficulty thinking about the future, hopefully everyone is healthy and well and happy.
