Artists are often categorized by their genres, when you think of rapping, you think of guys like Travis Scott or Drake, when you think of pop music you think of singers like Sabrina Carpenter or Ariana Grande. However there are a lot of artists who decide to take the risk and explore new elements of music, dabbling in other genres or even just full time switching their whole vibe. Here’s some of the biggest artists who actually pulled off the switch up:
_
Taylor Swift
Very few artists can say they’ve reinvented themselves as successfully as Taylor Swift did. Even while she was already massively successful in the country scene, Swift pivoted to a more pop music vibe to continue her dominance in the industry. However she wasn’t done there, just one switch wasn’t enough for her as she once again mixed it up by diving into some indiefolk style showing off her crazy diversity in the studio with her writing and with her producer Jack Antonoff. Safe to say she was successful in just about every era she entered.
Post Malone
For years, Post Malone was one of the rap scenes biggest stars, before he switched into a more Pop-Rock style of music, seen in his 2019 project Hollywood’s Bleeding, even capturing a feature from the legendary Ozzy Osbourne on “Take What You Want”, or on 2023’s album Austin where songs such as “Chemical” broke onto the scene, before he once again changed his genre of music, opting to get into the country scene in what may have been his most successful choice yet as in 2024 he dropped F1-Trillion which exploded in popularity, along with the help of country artist features like Morgan Wallen.
Lil Yachty
Originally a key part of the rap scene Lil Yachty was known for his unique sounding vocals and chill monotone rapping. However Yachty loved to experiment, and that he did with his 2023 project Let’s Start Here. Upon release, Yachty hadn’t told anyone what the sound of this project was, shocking fanbases on what many deem as his best work yet, implementing an almost psychedelic vibe to an R&B sound with soulful vocals piped in from almost what sounds like a choir. It’s yet to be seen if this was a permanent move from Yachty, as the project remains as the last solo record he’s released, however the impact across the industry was certainly felt as he inspires many more to branch out into the world of different genres.
Beyoncé
Another legend of the industry, Beyoncé created a name for herself originally releasing music within the vibe of R&B and pop music, building her reputation up until she gave the dance scene a try, in her album Renaissance. Similarly to Post Malone, she too quickly branched back out into the country scene, releasing her most recent project Cowboy Carter which was a massive success landing her the first Grammy award in her trophy cabinet.
Machine Gun Kelly
Once widely known as a rapper, Machine Gun Kelly, or MGK effectively rebranded himself completely in his switch over into a more Pop-Punk genre of music, using his album Tickets to my Downfall as his opening act into the scene, while also bringing the style of music back into mainstream media. This was a full commitment to the aesthetic where he collaborated with key figures in the subject such as Travis Barker, winning over the hearts of many especially the receptive Gen-Z audience.
