André Leon Talley

Late Tuesday, January 18th the news broke of fashion icon, André Leon Talley’s death at age 73. Posts flooded social media mourning his loss and honoring his legacy. The author, public speaker, television personality, and editor had a larger-than-life persona inspiring many with his encyclopedia knowledge of fashion and boundary-breaking career. Since the beginning of his career working for Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in 1974, he was a trailblazer working his way through the ranks of a predominantly white and elitist industry. It’s hard to condense his life’s work into a page let alone a paragraph but even watching a minute of one of his interviews gives you a sense of how infectious his energy and love for fashion was. His second job in fashion was working as a receptionist at Interview magazine under Andy Warhol before he moved to Paris to edit Women’s Wear Daily. He’s most well known for his time at Vogue, starting in 1983 as the fashion news director and was promoted to creative director in 1987 which he held for three decades. He helped shape the voice of the publication and finally left in 2013. His style, personality, words, and influence will be greatly missed. 

What Is ‘Yellowjackets’ and Why Is It Everywhere?

I’ve seen the word “Yellowjackets” more times than I can count in the last week—news headlines, tweets, and memes have all caught my attention. I still haven’t caved and watched the show but I did do a quick search to figure out what the hype is about. The survival drama is the female version of Lord of the Flies and if you’ve read the book then you know how cutthroat and gory survival can be. Set in two timelines, the first being 1996 when a New Jersey high-school soccer team called the Yellowjackets has their plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. The second is 2021 when four survivors (rescued months after the crash) have reached middle-age and are fearful of the events surrounding their survival coming to light. It’s an intriguing plot that sounds binge-worthy and full of cliffhangers as the events of the crash unfold. Reviews promise witty lines but warn it’s a queasy watch, holding no bloodshed back. The show’s title is a nod to wasps, not flies, because as per The New Yorker “girls require the ferocity of wasps, with their venom and their stingers. And their intelligence.” If you, like me, haven’t already seen Yellowjackets, the season finale just aired making it the perfect show for a marathon.

Is ‘Degrassi’ Getting an HBO Reboot?

The beloved Canadian teen drama franchise Degrassi has been revived for a reboot with HBO Max. It’s the show where Drake made his television debut and Nina Dobrev was a regular cast member long before The Vampire Diaries. In the words of Twitter u/seynique “Manny Santos walked so the girlies on euphoria could run” reminding everyone that Degrassi was one of the OG high school shows. Set to stream on HBO, the reboot will fall under the WarnerMedia Kids & Family section so don’t expect it to be as uncensored as some other HBO shows. The original creators will not be involved but new showrunners Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen are well versed in teen drama creating series like Backstage and Riverdale. Casting has not been announced but it will be an entirely new cast with the possibility of cameos from Degrassi alumni. It’s set to begin filming the 10, hour-long episodes in Toronto this summer for a 2023 release.

Who Is Angus Cloud and Why Is the Internet Obsessed?

It’s seemingly impossible to escape Euphoria these days but as season two continues to air an underdog has emerged to steal the spotlight and the internet can’t get enough. Angus Cloud, who plays Fezco, was the main character of season two’s premiere as his backstory was finally revealed which only made him more likable. Add a budding romance, the infamous bottle smashing scene, and just like that he became the internet’s latest obsession. So who is Angus Cloud? Before Euphoria he had no acting aspirations and was cast off the streets of New York by a casting agent simply because he looked the part. Cloud nailed the part of Fezco, infusing his own lingo and style into the character, so much so that the show scrapped plans to kill off Fezco in season one. His hit line “that’ll be $5.75 playboy” from season one was off script and in Cloud’s own words—just one example of his natural charisma that makes viewers swoon. Speaking to GQ on his fight scene with Nate he says “snitches get stitches,” and I can almost hear the sighs of teenage girls everywhere.
