Clinic fans are sure to be pleased with the band’s latest album showcasing their brand of kooky-yet-spooky industrial rock. While Great Britain is currently in a state of dissolution from the EU, Clinic puts on a very brave face of British embodiment.
The four-piece group from Liverpool’s latest album, Wheeltappers and Shunters, fixates on a Britain of the 1970s filled with perversion, sleaze and pomp. In fact, the album name is taken from a popular variety show in Britain at the time, The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club.
Lead singer Ade murmurs his way through 12 tracks that would feel at home as part of a 21st Century redux of A Clockwork Orange soundtrack. The two singles from the album,“Laughing Cavalier” and “Rubber Bullets” are psychedelic and robotic. “Laughing Cavalier” is especially enchanting with its mystical instrumental weave and steady chorus. This album probably wouldn’t be so exciting if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s been seven years since the band put out an album. Bands like Montreal’s Suuns have shown brilliance in Clinic’s absence, holding down the proverbial fort in industrial post-punk just fine, but it’s safe to say Clinic have been missed.
