Rihanna Unveils Super Bowl-Inspired Savage X Fenty Apparel
Rihanna has the power to do anything. We already established that. Now one more addition to her endless list of talents is her ability to make some of the biggest non-sports fans, like me, care about a sport for once. Who would have thought? Only weeks before Rihanna hits the stage for the Super Bowl LVII halftime show, she dropped a football-inspired apparel line from her Savage x Fenty brand, and let’s just say it’s hitting… hard. The limited-edition “Game Day” Collection features 17 styles of apparel ranging from varsity jerseys to hoodies, sweatpants, beanies, tube tops, and bandanas, all with branding along the lines of “Property of Savage x Fenty,” including boxer briefs covered in a football pattern. The pièce de résistance is a bedazzled t-shirt with a cheeky tagline that reads “Rihanna Concert Interrupted by a Football Game. Weird, But Whatever,” which is funny and iconic in all the right ways. The tagline was inspired by the 2013 meme from Beyoncé’s Super Bowl XLVII halftime show which was along the lines of “why is there a football game during a Beyoncé concert?” To hype the fans up even more for the show, RiRi is also launching a 3-day pop-up shop in LA from January 27-29 for fans to shop the entire football-inspired collection. Forget about NFL team jerseys because there is officially a new uniform for RiRi fans, and for the first time, I’m starting to get what the big Super Bowl fuss is about.

Kid LAROI Announces His Debut Album, ‘The First Time’
I can’t be the only one who thought Kid LAROI was Justin Bieber’s long-lost little brother from Australia, right? It’s the way the two exhibit talent beyond their age that makes people mistake the relationship between the duo. Naturally, people are surprised in the same manner when they find out Kid LAROI is just now releasing his debut album. For a 19-year-old, the Australian rapper has many notable collaborations under his belt, think Miley Cyrus, Juice WRLD, and of course, Justin Bieber. His breakthrough smash hit, “Stay” with the Canadian pop star topped the music charts in 21 countries, including Billboard’s Top 100. He released a series of solo singles in the year following and now, he’s returning with his first full-length album titled The First Time. In the 30-second trailer released by the singer, we hear his voiceover saying “You never forget the first time. The first time you fall in love, the first time you get caught, the first time you feel shame, the first real kiss.” Though he has not announced the release date for the album yet, the first song will come out on January 19. If his debut album is anything like his singles, fans are in for a real treat.

2023 Coachella Lineup: Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean, BLACKPINK, Pusha T, and More
Earlier this week, the official lineup for the 2023 Coachella Music Festival was released, and immediately, it became the talk of social media. Held in Indio, California, Coachella is happening on the weekends of April 14-16 and April 21-23 this year. In addition to being incredibly informative on who is performing, the arrangement of names on the poster is also a ruthless popularity contest broken down by tiers via font sizes. This year, Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean came out on top as the only names you don’t have to squint or zoom in to read. Bad Bunny had quite a year in 2022 breaking records and barriers for other Latin artists. Starting off 2023 strong, he is now the first Latin American solo artist and the first Spanish-language musician to headline Coachella. He’s set to close out the main stage for Night 1 of Coachella after sets from Gorillaz, Burna Boy, and Metro Boomin. BLACKPINK first strutted onto the desert stage back in 2019 and since then, they have released an album and are currently on the Asian leg of their world tour. They will be taking a break from touring to step up on the Coachella stage as the closing act for Night 2. Frank Ocean fans shouldn’t be surprised to see their favorite artist in the lineup, as the singer was first announced to headline back in 2021 before the event was nicked due to public health reasons. His set at this year’s festival marks his first public performance since wrapping up the promotion of his 2017 Blonde album, prompting some Twitter users to ask “does Frank Ocean even know he’s headlining Coachella?” No rock bands or rappers are featured at the top of the list, which may be a tell-ale sign of a shift in the industry. Other notable acts in the lineup include Pusha T, Kali Uchis, Kaytranada, and Rosalía. Let the wait begins for the biggest music desert fest of the year.

Donald Glover Working on New Music, Not Retiring Childish Gambino Name
It turns out Donald Glover is joking with us all along. The multi-hyphenated actor, writer, producer, singer, and comedian has suggested the retirement of his musical alter ego, Childish Gambino, ever since 2017 during an interview with Huff Po where he compared his album releases to movie sequels. “There is nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie, and we’re like, ‘again?’ I like it when something’s good, and when it comes back, there’s a reason to come back.” That was only a year after the release of his third album, Awaken, My Love! His announcement caused a frenzy amongst fans of his music. However, like many indecisive creatives, Glover went back and forth on his decision until 2020 when he released his full-length album 3.15.20. Since then, he’s kept busy completing the last two seasons of his hit FX series, Atlanta, but as a singer? It’s been radio silence for three years. Until this week, when he was interviewed by E!’s Laverne Cox at the 2023 Golden Globes, where he gave an update on his music career. “I’m making music right now. I love it. I’m in the studio; I’ve been bringing people in, secret people, and working on things.” When asked whether fans can expect new projects, he replies, “I’m just making it for fun right now. But soon, something will happen, I promise. Something will happen.” Childish Gambino fans can finally unclench their fists. Their beloved singer is not going away, and what can we say? Love always wins.

MorMor Debuts Live Set at The David Dunlap Observatory Ahead of ‘Semblance’ Tour
Have you ever imagined what an intimate concert in an observatory would look like? Toronto artist MorMor, born Seth Nyquist, teamed up with Kid. Studio to do just that. They captured his live session at the David Dunlap Observatory in Ontario, on a snowy and gloomy day, creating a 15-min long film that is otherworldly with ethereal light and coloring, much like MorMor’s music and angelic voice. Speaking to Flood Magazine about the session’s aesthetic, he said, “It appeared to me like a ’50s idea of what the future would look like, or something out of a Kubrick or Tarkovsky film.” The indie-pop artist is gearing up for his Semblance North American tour, in support of his debut album of the same name. Kicking off in Washington, DC, the singer will be performing in his hometown on January 26th at the Axis Club (tickets available here) and in Vancouver on January 31st at the Biltmore (tickets available here). The Semblance album and tour were a long time coming, think five years, since the success of his 2018 EP, Heaven’s Only Wishful. The falsetto-fuelled full-length album sees Nyquist contemplative as he uncovers hard truths about love, heartbreak, and personal growth. It’s the perfect pairing for a melancholic mood, pulling you deeper into your feels while you’re simultaneously soothed by MorMor’s thoughts and sounds, evoking a sense of comfort. Chances are, the Semblance tour will make for an intimate and transcendent experience.
