This morning, on July 6th in Paris, Demna unveiled his second couture collection for Balenciaga and tapped some familiar faces for the runway show. The first clue came when Kris Jenner and North West were spotted in attendance with no sign of Kim Kardashian. Showgoers included the elusive Alexa Demie (does she go out in public for anything else?), Offset, Playboi Carti, Tracee Ellis Ross, Emily Ratajkwoski, and Keith Urban. Sound hectic? Indeed, the sheer volume of paparazzi photos proves the entrance to the show was a runway in itself. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman shared a sweet pre-show kiss with noticeably less tongue than PDA-inclined couple Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker. There also seemed to be an unspoken dress code of all black, which made sense once the show started and the first 13 looks followed the same color palette. Offset looked like he was about to enter the Matrix wearing a floor-length satin trench coat and chunky black boots. North West wore similar boots and Kris Jenner’s wraparound sunglasses could easily be pulled from the Matrix costume department. Either way, Demna’s guests made a strong case for all the different ways to wear black.

Once the show kicked off, models donning retro-futuristic looks with sleek tailoring emerged one after another from the salon’s carved ivory doors. There was a noticeable shift to evening wear as floor-length dress-wearing supermodels came strutting in with angular shapes and power shoulders. First comes monochrome, then comes glamour, then comes celebrities with power. Kim Kardashian walked down the katwalk in a black molded bustier dress and Demna’s angular stilettos. Dua Lipa, who’s been wearing lots of Balenciaga on tour, came out in a yellow cocktail dress and black gloves. While Nicole Kidman looked like an aluminum foil special edition Barbie in a crinkled silver gown with a dramatically long train. I’m convinced Naomi Campbell is the only person that can pull off a dome-like black ball gown because she was giving Queen of Spades like no other.

Demna wasn’t quick to embrace celebrities in the early days of his career but seems to have come around recently dressing Dua Lipa and Kanye for their respective tours and he took Kim Kardashian to the 2021 Met Gala. Balenciaga campaigns have also featured Justin Bieber and Cardi B. The biggest proof of the Demna effect, in my opinion, is Alexa Demie’s recurring attendance. She’s noticeably absent from award shows and events even when her Euphoria castmates are present but will never miss a Balenciaga show.
