“Ice me out” is a lyric you’ve probably heard before, and the rapper singing it, Kash Doll is no stranger to iced out jewelry. From VVS diamonds to emeralds and rubies, many musicians put their creativity and bankroll to the test when designing custom jewelry. Icy teeth have been synonymous with hip-hop culture since the ‘80s but more and more musicians from different genres are commissioning grillz with their own unique take. It’s no longer just gold teeth or diamond-crusted mouthpieces, artists are having hand-painted sets with crazy details like real flowers and Basquiat crowns. From Madonna, the Queen of Pop, to hip-hop’s resident trendsetter, A$AP Rocky, these are a handful of the best grillz we’ve seen.
Madonna
The Queen of Pop is no stranger to grillz but her best set by far is an icy top piece with the letters “M”, “X”, a Basquiat crown, a Takashi Murakami flower, hearts, and a star by Gabby Elan Jewelry. The numerous fire emojis on Elan’s Instagram photo says it all.
A$AP Rocky
This year, A$AP Rocky commissioned a new set of grillz from Japanese jeweler Tetsuya Akiyama. He wore them to Yams Day 2021, the yearly celebration of A$AP Yams who passed away six years ago. The iced-out mouthpiece is made of natural pink and canary diamonds, and real flowers.
J Balvin
Latin superstar J. Balvin worked with celebrity favorite Gabby Elan Jewelry for two different grillz. The first being a top and bottom hand-painted clouds set and the second is a bottom set with vibrant smiley faces— choosing attention-to-detail designs over diamonds.
Snoh Aalegra
The sultry R&B singer got her grillz from The Grillest, a one-of-one grill shop on Melrose Avenue in L.A. who have worked with Aminé, Kaash Paige, and Tyler The Creator. Aalegra’s set is bottom-heavy with an outlined tooth on the top, giving her a smile that looks like the icy emoji in real life.
24kGoldn
With a name like 24kGoldn, it’s no surprise that he commissioned a custom top and bottom set of gold teeth. Goldsmith Everett Wiethorn and The Crown Collection Jewelers designed 18k gold grillz with hand-engraved Aztec designs. 24kGoldn chose an Aztec theme to celebrate the release of his debut album El Dorado earlier this year.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa took her 2021 Grammy Awards outfit one step further by getting a top color-coordinated grill to match her rhinestone butterfly dress. The Gabby Elan Jewelry-designed set was the perfect accessory.
Lil Yachty
Lil Yachty has never shied away from color and the 2017 Grammy Awards were no exception. Icebox Diamonds & Watches—a favorite amongst rappers like Lil Baby, Gunna, and Davido—made him a custom rainbow grill for the occasion. The top and bottom set featured blue and yellow diamonds, red rubies, and green emeralds.
Pharrell
Everyone’s favorite musician slash fashion designer, Pharrell, has commissioned a new set of grillz by Gabby Elan Jewelry. The colorful set of VS+ white diamonds, yellow diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are all custom rose cut—Pharrell’s favorite. The precious stones are cast in 22 karat gold, giving Pharrell the iciest smile.
Post Malone
Move over Lil Uzi, there’s a new facial ornament amongst musicians. Post Malone just upgraded his smile to bedazzled fangs, costing a casual $1.6 million. The hybrid veneers were a collaborative effort between celeb dentist Thomas Connelly, cosmetic dentist Naoki Hayashi, and Angel City Jewelers’ Isaak Bokhoor. This marks the first time Connelly has embedded a diamond as a tooth and there’s apparently a famous-person waitlist now. First Crocs, now diamond veneers—is Post Malone a trendsetter?
