The lines between fashion and music have always been blurred. Artists have been shouting out some of the biggest names in fashion in their lyrics for decades. It’s a low-key way of flexing their personal style. While it may be hard to miss a “Versace” drop in a verse, those who aren’t fashion obsessed might miss the niche brand names in lyrics like Amiri Jeans, VLONE, Raf Simons, and Off-White. What started off as a lyrical habit for luxury houses—think Gucci, Chanel, Dior—evolved into a trend amongst rappers to give shout-outs to the lesser-known brands keeping them dripped out.
The co-sign from musicians is highly coveted because it can take a brand from subculture status to mainstream. Take for example the brand Off-White, brainchild of Virgil Abloh, whose personal connection to music (he’s a DJ and the former creative director for Kanye West) and many lyrical endorsements, heavily impacted the success of his label. He returned the favor when he was appointed artistic director of menswear for Louis Vuitton and cast Kid Cudi, Playboi Carti, A$AP Nast, and Dev Hynes in his first runway show—further solidifying the relationship between fashion and music.
In honor of this tradition, we rounded up some of the best lyrics that shout out brands with words by Young Thug, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, and more.
