I am a firm believer that all Taylor Swift songs are written in the stars. There’s something about her lyrics that is so unflinchingly relatable, that it’s impossible not to connect her songs to your own life. However, between old music, new music, and multiple “Taylor’s Version” releases, her album 1989 has consistently remained a fan favorite. What may be less obvious at first listen is how each track on this album seems to be cosmically tuned to the personality traits and quirks of the twelve zodiac signs. As your resident Swiftie and occasional horoscope reader, I sat down with a true astrology girly to play her 1989 from start to finish and decide exactly what songs of the album best fit each zodiac sign. Spoiler alert: it took us all about 30 seconds into each song to come to an agreement on which track best fit each sign. So if you were doubting just how astrology-coded this album is, think again.
Grab your star charts and headphones, Swifties! On the eve of the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), we’re breaking down songs off the album that are just so cosmically you.
Aries: “Blank Space”
“‘Cause, darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream”—need we say more? While Taylor wrote this song to poke fun at the “crazy girlfriend” stereotype the public portrayed her as, it kind of describes the vibe of an Aries a bit too accurately. Driven by impulsivity, you’re often learning lessons the hard way. You feel things very intensely and don’t always have the best self-control, but that makes you, you. Just like Taylor in “Blank Space,” you tend to charge ahead in relationships, often experiencing love with the same passion and intensity she describes in the song. Some people may call you crazy, but you’re just living life to the fullest, unfazed.
Taurus: “All You Had To Do Was Stay”
This track resonates with the dependable nature of a Taurus. Your unwavering commitment and reluctance to let go are mirrored in Taylor’s plea for someone to stay. You value loyalty and stability in relationships, sometimes to a fault. As Taylor points out, “it could have been easy, all you had to do was stay.” It really is that easy for you. You stand your ground and hold onto the people you care about, making the song the perfect reflection of your determination when it comes to relationships. You’re all in, and you want those around you to do the same.
Gemini: 1/2 “Shake It Off” & 1/2 “This Love”
We couldn’t give you Geminis just one song. Both “This Love” and “Shake It Off” reflect the duality of a Gemini’s personality. While “This Love” embodies your tender, emotional side, “Shake It Off” caters to your playful, carefree side. You can immerse yourself in a deep connection, while also shaking off your troubles and dancing your way through life. Both songs mirror the twin-like nature of Geminis. You’re able to effortlessly switch between deep emotional connection and lighthearted, resilient attitudes.
Cancer: “You Are In Love”
“No proof, one touch. But you felt enough” just screams Cancer. Taylor perfectly captures the emotional depth and nurturing qualities of a Cancer in “You Are In Love.” Your emotions are kind of like an exposed nerve, you feel everything very deeply, sometimes too personally if we’re being honest. The song captures that kind of perfect, butterfly-inducing love story you’re searching for. It’s not necessarily even the person you’re falling in love with, but more so the love story itself. You love the idea of being in love, which is reminiscent of this song seeing as Taylor actually wrote it about Jack Antonoff and his then-fiancé Lena Dunham, and not one of her own relationships. Ruled by the moon, you’re always going to find comfort in the perfect fantasy, and that just happens to be exactly what Taylor describes in “You Are In Love.”
Leo: “How You Get The Girl”
Just like “How You Get The Girl,” Leos are charismatic, theatrical, and flirty. You’re all for the grand gestures. While the song’s lyrics may seem cheesy to everyone else, that’s just what you like. You have flair for the dramatic. You really are the main character. You want someone to tell you they’ll wait for you “forever and ever” and “How You Get The Girl” is quite literally the step-by-step guide to cuffing a Leo. The song resonates with your confident, charming, and larger-than-life approach to love, making it the perfect soundtrack to your love story.
Virgo: “Style”
Virgos notices all the details. The long hair slicked back, the white t-shirt, the red lip, the tight little skirt? You pay attention to it all. The song’s lyrics capture the essence of Virgo’s desire for perfection and elegance, as it explores the allure of a well-crafted relationship. Just as you tend to meticulously plan and organize your life, “Style” celebrates the art of creating an aesthetically pleasing connection. Your eye for refinement resonates with the song’s emphasis on the perfect ‘style,’ making it a fitting reflection of your sophisticated approach to love and life. You’re an earth sign and you’ll never go out of style.
Libra: “I Know Places”
While you may not be trying to escape media attention like Taylor is actually talking about in this song, “I Know Places” still captures the essence of a Libra’s innate ability to seek harmony and balance. The song’s lyrics allude to hiding and escaping from prying eyes, much like your desire for a peaceful environment. “I Know Places” resonates with your talent for finding refuge and maintaining composure in the midst of chaos. But, above all, of course, a Libra knows places — you’ve probably dated the entire zodiac wheel.
Scorpio: “I Wish You Would”
Is it a sign that I’m a Scorpio and this is my favorite song on the album? “I Wish You Would” perfectly captures the longing that we Scorpio girlies try to hide under a cool exterior. You tend to keep your cards close to your chest, but that doesn’t mean you still don’t wish things could be different. Scorpios are probably the most complex of the signs, often misunderstood because of their moodiness (as a fellow Scorpio I’m allowed to admit to this). When Taylor said “Wish you knew that I miss you too much to be mad anymore,” you really felt that. The song embodies all the emotions you’d never admit to anyone else, except maybe your therapist and even that’s debatable.
Sagittarius: “Welcome To New York”
“Welcome to New York” is just like you — carefree, optimistic, and a whole lotta fun. Taylor, a fellow Sag herself, perfectly describes the thrill of new beginnings to a lighthearted, energetic beat that’ll keep a skip in your step as you strut down the street listening to this song. “Welcome to New York” is your perfect anthem for embracing the unknown. You’re always searching for a sound you haven’t heard before in the words of Ms. Swift. It’s your world and we’re just living in it. Who knows? Channel your inner Taylor and maybe it’ll be you with the apartment on Cornelia Street.
Capricorn: “Bad Blood”
You may not have beef with Katy Perry (which is what this song is rumored to be about), but “Bad Blood” still embodies the determined nature of a Capricorn. The lyrics around broken trust and the drive for success mirror your commitment to your goals. Your strong moral compass allows you to cut ties when you need to. You have a no-nonsense attitude and let’s face it, can be a little unhinged at times. You don’t care to be bogged down by trivial stuff that will prevent you from achieving your goals.
Aquarius: “New Romantics”
Taylor said it best: “We are too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet.” You’re the new romantic, baby! The song’s lyrics celebrate a new era of love and adventure, mirroring your innovative and open-minded approach to relationships. You thrive on breaking free from tradition and exploring new horizons. You’re all for embracing change and living life in the moment. “New Romantics” is your perfect anthem to continue on with your rule-breaking ways. Who needs normalcy when you’re you?
Pisces: “Wildest Dreams”
“Wildest Dreams” describes a love story that exists in the realm of fantasy, and that’s pretty much a Pisces to a tee. “Say you’ll see me again, even if it’s just pretend” is just so Pisces coded we couldn’t have picked any other song to describe you. The song resonates with your ethereal outlook on love. You have a unique ability to dive into the deepest waters of emotion and create enchanting, dreamlike connections. It gives delulu sometimes but, may all your delulu become trululu.
